UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is the world’s leading organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. We work to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, war or disaster at home, and we provide shelter, food, water, medical care and other life-saving assistance to refugees around the world.
UNHCR is seeking an enthusiastic Communications and Public Outreach Intern who is a solid, multi-purpose writer with a keen interest in developing content for both specialized and general audiences. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience within an international humanitarian organization, working with the Communications and Public Information team to raise the profile of UNHCR’s work through the creation of a wide array of communications materials. Whether it’s crafting copy for a public outreach campaign or helping conduct research for high-level briefing notes, this role will provide insight and experience in communications work as well as administrative and team support. It sits alongside a second intern role, focused on social media and digital engagement.

Duties and responsibilities
• Support with general writing requirements and editing as needed, including by producing briefing notes and talking points for a high-level audience;
• Take complex information and package it in plain language for the general public;
• Conduct interviews and write compelling stories for publication on digital platforms;
• Conduct research on current refugee issues and provide key points and summaries in support of wider communications material;
• Assist with creative partnerships, including drafting research and attending relevant meetings;
• Help drafting creative pitches for relevant public outreach and advocacy campaigns, and provide support throughout their life cycles, including by using digital campaign tools;
• Create, work with and update databases and media lists;
• Manage email, filing, and administrative duties as required;
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications required
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a strong capacity to provide accurate information clearly and concisely;
• Proven experience in writing for a wide variety of supports for both internal and external audiences, or keen interest in learning how to do so;
• Keen eye for a good story, and high level of maturity and diplomacy when conducting interviews;
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to learn quickly;
• Capable of multi-tasking with several competing requests and effectively manage priorities;
• Comfortable learning and demonstrating problem-solving skills to complete project deliverables;
• Proven ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
• Functions effectively in a virtual team environment, with strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills;
• Basic knowledge of public policies around refugee issues, and motivation to work in mobilizing the public in support of refugees;
• Bilingualism (English/French) is a strong asset.

Eligibility
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Allowance
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.

Contexte
Dans le cadre du partenariat avec le ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie (MRIF) et afin de contribuer au rayonnement du Québec à l’étranger et au développement de la jeunesse québécoise, LOJIQ présente à nouveau le programme de stages individuels en milieu de travail au sein des représentations du Québec à l’étranger pour l’année 2020-2021.

Milieu de stage
Le Bureau du Québec à Shanghai exerce un mandat général de promotion du Québec et de coordination des relations institutionnelles, économiques, scientifiques, technologiques, éducatives et culturelles. Le bureau couvre le sud de la Chine, incluant Hong Kong et Macao.

Profil du participant
Critères d’admissibilité
– Être âgé de 18 à 35 ans
– Être citoyen canadien ou détenteur du statut de résident permanent
– Détenir une carte valide d’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ)
– Habiter au Québec depuis au moins un an
– Avoir terminé ses études et être sans emploi ou sous-employé (occuper un emploi à temps partiel dans un domaine non lié à sa formation)
– Les travailleurs autonomes sont également admissibles
– Les étudiants ne sont pas admissibles

Profil recherché
– Avoir obtenu récemment un baccalauréat ou une maîtrise en communications, marketing, multimédia, relations internationales, science politique, droit international, journalisme, administration, sciences économiques, études chinoises/de l’Asie de l’Est, géographie, histoire ou tout autre domaine pertinent en lien avec le mandat du stage
– Avoir une bonne connaissance de la Chine et de l’Asie
– Avoir une bonne connaissance générale du Québec et de ses secteurs d’excellence commerciaux, de son système d’éducation et de sa culture
– Être très autonome pour pouvoir réaliser les tâches demandées sans une supervision constante
– Posséder de très bonnes capacités d’analyse et de rédaction.
– Avoir une excellente capacité pour vulgariser des contenus et les rendre attrayants pour le public sur les réseaux sociaux
– Avoir une bonne capacité d’adaptation et une bonne capacité à travailler sous pression pour respecter des délais restreints
– Maîtriser le français et l’anglais à l’oral comme à l’écrit
– Maîtriser le chinois (mandarin) parlé et écrit (caractères simplifiés) est un atout majeur
– Avoir une bonne connaissance du réseau social WeChat est un atout majeur
– Avoir une bonne connaissance des autres plateformes et réseaux sociaux chinois et de l’Internet chinois est un atout
– Posséder un ordinateur fonctionnel, ainsi qu’une connexion internet à haute vitesse

Communications Officer, McGill University Health Centre Foundation

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation is in an exciting period of growth, focusing on strategic priorities for future expansion and success, including the launch of our Dream Big Campaign this fall. We are seeking a Communications Officer to join our team and play an important role in positioning our Foundation as a leader in health care philanthropy.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Director, Communications and Marketing, the candidate will join a dedicated group of fundraising professionals, and be part of a six-member team of marketing and communication experts.
The incumbent will be responsible for leading the foundation’s media relations activities, as well as writing engaging omni-channel content with a key focus on social and web platforms. He/she will play a pivotal role in pitching unique and compelling story ideas to media and generating meaningful learned media related to our fundraising priorities and donors. The ideal candidate will enhance the
Foundation’s visibility and promote the people inspired to support our Foundation, as well as shine a light on the clinicians and researchers changing the course of lives and medicine at the McGill University Health Centre.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
• Write and edit engaging omni-channel content including but not limited to; press releases, social media posts, web stories, and newsletters as well as provide writing and editing support to digital and annual programs
• Work in collaboration with Director, Communications and Marketing and other members of the Marketing and Communications team to ensures consistency in branding, messaging, voice and quality across all platforms
• Write and pitch compelling press releases, major announcements, and editorials to print, radio and digital media outlets, as well as manage newswire distribution
• Act as primary media contact. Manage media inquiries, coordinate interview requests, as well as train and prepare subject matter experts – ensuring key message alignment and role of the Foundation
• Anticipate potential media opportunities and develop strategies and content to support outreach
• Foster existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts within the industry to ensure prominent and consistent coverage
• Manage media monitoring and produce analytics as needed for tracking and reporting to senior leadership
• Responsible for social media strategy and content development, including monitoring and engagement, with a focus on increasing brand awareness and driving conversions (to web site and online donation platforms)
• Contribute to Marketing and Communication department’s content calendar

EXPERIENCE
• University Degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field required
• 3+ years of relevant professional experience in communications, preferably in a nonprofit organization
• Previous experience in media relations
• Superior copywriting and editing skills
• Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a small, close-knit team, and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
• Ability to rise to new challenges, find creative solutions, and prioritize competing demands with an unwavering commitment to detail and deadlines
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with colleagues, donors, physicians, researchers, media and other stakeholders
• Bilingualism – excellent oral and written communication skills in both official languages
