Applications open for 2020 EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship

Ottawa – The European Union Delegation to Canada and the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) are thrilled to launch the 2020 edition of the European Union-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship. 
The EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship aims to recognize outstanding journalistic talent among young Canadians. Since 2001, three candidates have been selected every year to participate in a week-long study tour to experience the EU institutions, the Canadian Mission to the EU, and media outlets in Brussels. Winners will also attend the daily European Commission press briefing. All expenses are paid for by the European Union Delegation to Canada. Winners will also benefit from a one-year CAJ membership or one-year CAJ membership renewal.Prior to the trip, winners will be invited to an awards ceremony co-hosted by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Commons and the CAJ in Ottawa.The EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship seeks to foster links between Europeans and Canadians and to raise awareness of the European Union among a new generation of Canadian students and journalists. Winners are required to submit a sample of their work and to chronicle their study tour experience online or in print during the study tour or upon their return from Europe (i.e. published articles, blogging, social media platforms). 

Eligibility:
In order to be eligible, participants must be: 
Actively enrolled in a Canadian university/post-secondary institution or active in the field of journalismBetween the ages 18-30 Canadian citizen or permanent resident  

Applications must include:

1. Sample of work 
Applicants are invited to submit a recent sample of their work in any format, in English or French, about the European Union or European Union-Canada relations.
Entry requirements:If print:
-News stories or opinion pieces of maximum 1,000 words, unpublished or published within the six previous months from application date.
-If audio-visual: News reports of up to 90 seconds duration or mini-documentaries of anywhere between 4 and 5 minutes. 
-The date of the unpublished text or report must be indicated. In case of published text or broadcast report, the date and name of media outlet must be indicated. The jury will pay particular attention to journalistic qualities and talent, rigorous research, factual accuracy and topic relevance to EU and EU-Canada relations. 

2.  Letter of motivation
Applicants must write a letter of motivation clearly outlining specific topics they plan to write about during/upon return from Europe and where their work will appear (media outlet, social media, blog etc.) Winners will have complete editorial independence and, while the Delegation and the Canadian Association of Journalists will retain the right to publish/reproduce their work to promote the program in future years, applicants will maintain intellectual property rights of their work.The letter should also include the reasons for applying and the anticipated benefits to be derived from participation in the study trip.

Final selection by the Jury:
The Jury, consisting of EU Delegation representatives, professional journalists and academics, will meet in spring 2020 to select the best pieces received by the closing date. The decisions of the Jury will be final. The three winners will be notified directly.

Ottawa – La Délégation de l’Union européenne au Canada et l’Association Canadienne des Journalistes (ACJ) ont le plaisir de lancer l’édition 2020 du Prix Union européenne-Canada pour jeunes journalistes.
 
Le Prix UE-Canada pour jeunes journalistes vise à reconnaître le talent journalistique exceptionnel des jeunes canadiens. Chaque année depuis 2001, trois candidat(e)s sont sélectionné(e)s pour participer à un voyage d’étude d’une semaine auprès de différentes institutions européennes, de la mission du Canada auprès de l’UE, et de divers médias à Bruxelles. Les lauréat(e)s auront l’opportunité d’assister au point presse journalier de la Commission européenne. Tous les frais sont payés par la Délégation de l’Union européenne au Canada. Les gagnants bénéficieront également d’une adhésion d’un an à l’ACJ ou du renouvellement de leur adhésion à l’ACJ pour une durée d’un an.
 
Avant le voyage, les lauréat(e)s seront invité(e)s à une cérémonie de remise des prix co-organisée avec le Bureau du Président de la Chambre des communes et l’ACJ à Ottawa.
 
Le Prix UE-Canada vise à renforcer les liens entre Européens et Canadiens et à sensibiliser les nouvelles générations d’étudiants et de journalistes canadiens aux activités de l’Union européenne.
 
Les lauréat(e)s sont tenu(e)s de présenter un exemple de leur travail et de faire la chronique, en ligne ou à l’écrit, de leur expérience durant leur voyage–étude ou à leur retour (par exemple, des articles écrits, des blogs, ou sur les réseaux sociaux).  

Eligibilité:

Pour être admissibles, les étudiant(e)s doivent être:
 
Inscrits dans une université / établissement d’enseignement post secondaire ou actifs dans le domaine du journalisme
Avoir entre 18 et 30 ans
Avoir la citoyenneté canadienne ou être résident(e)s permanent(e)s
 
Toute candidature doit inclure:
 
1. Exemple de travail
Les candidat(e)s sont invité(e)s à soumettre un exemple de leur travail, en anglais ou en français, se concentrant sur l’Union européenne ou les relations entre l’Union européenne et le Canada.
 
Conditions : 
-Sujet imprimé : articles d’actualité ou d’opinion d’un maximum de 1 000 mots, non publiés ou publiés dans les six mois précédant la date de soumission.
 
– Format audio-visuel : rapports d’actualité d’une durée maximale de 90 secondes ou mini-documentaires d’une durée comprise entre 4 et 5 minutes.
 
– La date de production de texte ou de reportage non-publié doit être précisée. Dans le cas de texte publié ou de reportage diffusé, la date et le nom de la publication doivent être indiqués.
 
Le jury portera une attention particulière aux qualités journalistiques et au talent, à la recherche rigoureuse, la véracité des faits, et la pertinence du sujet pour l’Union européenne et ses relations avec le Canada.
 
 
2.  Lettre de motivation
Les candidat(e)s doivent présenter une lettre de motivation détaillant clairement les sujets spécifiques sur lesquels ils envisagent d’écrire durant leur visite ou à leur retour d’Europe, ainsi que l’endroit où leur travail sera présenté (media, réseaux sociaux, blog, etc.)  
 
Les gagnant(e)s auront une totale liberté éditoriale et, tandis que la Délégation et l’Association Canadienne des Journalistes conserveront le droit de publier / reproduire leur travail afin de promouvoir le programme dans les années à venir, les appliquant conserveront les droits de propriété intellectuelle de leur travail.
 
La lettre doit également inclure les raisons de l’application, ainsi que les avantages dont le participant s’attend à bénéficier en prenant part à ce voyage d’étude.

About the Scholarship

“As developers of PDF converter, creator and editor solutions, we know what an important role data has to play in our everyday lives and especially in the news. Now more than ever, factual data analysis is crucial to the integrity of investigative reporting, and learning to do so accurately is essential. That’s why we’re getting involved right where it matters most when it comes to the future of the journalism industry — the students.

Our aim for this scholarship is to support and encourage journalism students by helping them with the costs of their education, which can often be a hindrance to their career. Not only that, but we intend for this scholarship to serve as a way to help prepare students for a career path as a journalist by getting them to think about the industry and its ever increasing emphasis on data.”

Eligibility

The Investintech – CAJ Data Journalism Scholarship is open to students who show an interest in data journalism and are:

  • Majoring in a journalism program, working towards either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Currently accepted to or enrolled in a college or university in Canada.
  • Pursuing a course of studies leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree in journalism.

Submission and Application Details

Submitted work may be a published item, class assignment or even an item on a personal blog.

  • Work must have been produced within one calendar year of the scholarship closing date.
  • Individual work is preferred. If submitted item is produced as part of a team of two or more, applicant must have done the bulk of the work.
  • Previous winners are not eligible to apply.

The submission must include:

  • An example of a work of journalism that shows the application of data skills (e.g. use of spreadsheets, web scraping, use of mapping tool).
  • An explanation of what you did and how you did it, including the resources you used.
  • An idea for a project you would like to work on, particularly if you had more data journalism skills.
  • A letter of support from an instructor or editor.

Political Matters Journalism Internship Program

The Political Matters Journalism Internship Program will once again provide two student journalists with an opportunity to hone their political reporting skills on Parliament Hill over the coming summer.

The successful candidates will be introduced to the exciting world of political journalism in Ottawa.

The host news organizations will be confirmed shortly, but senior journalists will mentor aspiring political journalists and work with them to develop the skills to pursue a career in Canadian media.

The interns will receive a $10,000 honorarium from Political Matters for their participation in the 13-week program.

Initial funding for the program, launched in September 2018, came from an event at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec.  The fundraiser was supported by many organizations and individuals with a passion for journalism, politics and political journalism, who believe in the importance of journalism to Canada’s political life.

The invitation to apply is extended to students enrolled in journalism programs at Canadian universities, colleges and polytechnical institutes, students involved in campus media, and Canadian citizens enrolled in journalism programs at universities abroad.

The Laval News, an independent bi-weekly community newspaper serving the Laval region, is seeking a full-time reporter to join our editorial staff

Qualifications
The ideal candidate is:
a graduate of a college or university journalism program and/or significant professional experience working as a journalist
an excellent communicator in English with a good working ability in French
familiar with basic computer software WORD OUTLOOK
a capable photographer who owns a digital camera
a licensed driver, preferably with a car
An ability to work some evenings and weekends is essential (with time off provided during the week as compensation).

Appreciation of community journalism and familiarity with the region are strong assets.
