Position Details: Full Time, temporary 6 weeks fixed term (fill-in position)

Reports to: Adrienne Wood, Managing Editor

THE POSITION

Canada’s National Observer is seeking a reporter to cover youth in the Greater Toronto Area for a 6 weeks temporary fill-in position starting Sept 12 and ending Oct 22, 2022. In this role, you’ll produce 5-7 stories weekly about politics and civics from the perspective of youth.

You’ll also cover topics including but not limited to mental health, the environment, work and affordability from a youth perspective and about youth in the Greater Toronto Area.

You’ll be responsible for posting your stories daily to the CP Portal and for promoting them on social media.

You’ll be supervised by CNO Managing Editor Adrienne Tanner and will collaborate with the CNO team of editors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pitch, research, write news and long-form feature articles about a youth perspective about youth in the GTA
  • Produce 5-7 stories weekly
  • Take photos and videos for stories
  • Upload stories to CNO site and CP Portal
  • Collaborate with CNO team of editors
  • Promote audience engagement with CNO content, including through social media.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in journalism
  • Experience filing stories, working for major news outlets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience writing and researching news stories and features
  • Located in Toronto GTA
  • Familiar with Toronto GTA politics and other news issues

COMPENSATION

• $28.85 hourly salary

This is a temporary, fixed term full-time time position.

This is a bargaining unit position. The collective agreement between Observer Media Group (Canada’s National Observer) and the Canadian Media Guild applies.
