Community Newspaper Reporter THE EQUITY

The Equity is an independent weekly community newspaper that has served the Pontiac area of rural west Quebec since 1883.

We are seeking a reporter to join our editorial staff based in Shawville, Quebec (one hour west of Ottawa/Gatineau).

As a member of a small team of journalists, the reporter will be expected to complete weekly story assignments in time for publication in the next week’s newspaper, usually requiring turnaround within a few days.

The work involves research, attendance at events, seeking out contacts, interviewing, writing, photography and layout. It may also involve recording and editing video clips and uploading content to the website.

Candidates must hold a college diploma or university degree in journalism. They must have an excellent command of English. Fluency in French is a major asset.

Candidates will also be assessed on their vision of the importance of journalism and the extent that it motivates their interest in working in this field.

Candidates should be familiar with Mac operating systems and InDesign. They should own a suitable digital camera, be a licensed driver and, ideally, have their own car.

The position pays $18/hour for a 35-hour week from the beginning of April 2021 through the end of March 2022. Low-cost accommodation in Shawville may be a possibility.

Applications, including a covering letter, résumé and writing samples, should be submitted by email to Charles Dickson, Publisher of The Equity, at charles.dickson@theequity.ca by 26 March 2021.
