CJLO 1690AM is proud to announce an audio storytelling residency as part of a new initiative called Sounds In Our Changing Worlds, a project aimed at creating audio content on the climate change emergency in Montreal. This is an 11-week engagement for a radio producer or journalist living and working in Canada, preferably in Montreal. The selected candidate will work closely with an assistant as well as CJLO’s Station Manager Francella Fiallos and Program Director Allison O’Reilly.
The selected candidate will be producing an audio project of their choosing, but we would encourage them to select from the following formats: documentary series, oral history, and audio installation/audio art.
In 2021, it is imperative for media organizations to cover the climate crisis with a sense of urgency and immediacy. CJLO, a campus-community radio station and alternative media entity, has a mandate to provide this coverage to our listenership as well as provide resources to educate more people on how to effectively tell stories on the climate crisis. Through audio storytelling, our candidate will be able to creatively and innovatively tell meaningful stories that relay facts to our audiences and provide an immersive experience with a traditional medium.
CJLO 1690AM was formed in 1998 as a merger between CRSG and CFLI, two former stations based at Concordia University’s two campuses. CJLO is 100 per cent non-profit and programmed almost entirely by volunteers, the station is located in the heart of the Loyola
campus in the NDG borough in Montreal.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Research and production: The selected candidate will need to produce audio content directly related to the climate crisis as it pertains to life in Montreal and is suitable for CJLO’s airwaves and online streaming platform. We would highly encourage experimental, creative, and innovative forms of audio storytelling.
Creation: Create original audio works for broadcast and online streaming (and if the candidate wishes, for podcast delivery). Details regarding scope, number of works, and duration can be confirmed in consideration of the artist’s individual work. However, we would suggest the following based on the three formats previously mentioned:
-For an audio documentary series: eight episodes 30 minutes in length, released weekly
-For an audio installation: no more than 4 hours worth of content
-For an oral history: no more than a 90 minute non-narrative feature and no more than 5
hours of raw interview content that could be made available later
Engagement: Working with an assistant to develop an outline and strategy for a workshop dedicated to climate change journalism meant for volunteers and students. Working closely with our news department to ensure more coverage of climate change in our hourly newscasts and special longform reporting features.
-Regular communication with CJLO team via email and Slack
-Monthly staff meetings and monthly staff reports
-Promotion of work at the end of the residency with the candidate discussing their work process
