CBC Internships

CBC News is at the forefront of local digital and broadcast journalism in Montreal. At CBC Montreal, we gather, produce and broadcast news in Quebec for CBC Radio,CBC Television and CBC.CA/Montreal.

We are currently seeking two interns: One for the Fall 2023 session, and one for the Winter 2024 session.

Internships Goals

Each intern will be given the opportunity to gain practical experience at CBC News in Montreal.

Specifically, each intern will work as a junior member of the CBC News desk team and will learn to gather information, fact check, pitch stories, and take part in the broadcast production of stories. The internship will be in person.

Application Deadline for both dates: August 11, 2023 at 5pm

There is also an interview at CBC as part of the process.

Requirements

• 160 hours of for credit service. Approximately 16 hours per week for 10 weeks in CBC News Montreal.This amounts to 3 credits at Concordia.

• This internship is offered under the Jour 450: Journalism Practicum course, for a total of three credits. Students must obtain departmental approval to enrol in this program.

• Note – Students undertaking these internships are not excused from classes or other courses

OMNI Television Scholarship Program

Calling all journalism students – OMNI Television has launched its OMNI Scholarship Program for 2023.  These scholarships are open to all eligible post-secondary students (including those entering their 1st year) across Canada who are pursuing careers in ethnic and third-language journalism.  OMNI will award 10 scholarships of $2,000 each this Fall.  Deadline to submit is no later than 1:00 PM EST, Wednesday, May 24, 2023.  

  • OMNI Scholarship Program invests in third-language journalism talent and supports post-secondary students majoring in journalism who wish to pursue a career in ethnic and third-language journalism
  • Up to ten (10) scholarships will be available at the bachelor or diploma level
  • These scholarships are valued at $2,000 CAD each, valid for one year
  • An eligible applicant must:
  • Have Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status in Canada as of the application deadline date
  • Be planning to enter the first year or already be enrolled in full-time studies towards a first bachelor’s degree or a first diploma program

[FRENCH – Bursary for freelancers] – Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec (Ajiq)

Les bourses d’excellence de l’AJIQ visent à encourager la réalisation de reportages issus du journalisme indépendant.

Premier appel (15 février 2023 – clôture : 15 mars 2023)


Critères d’admissibilité :
– Être membre de l’Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec (AJIQ)*
– Les reportages doivent être réalisés au Canada ou au Québec.

*Le statut de journaliste indépendant (pigiste) correspond à celui de travailleur autonome au sens de la loi sur l’impôt.

Précisions sur le contenu des dossiers :

Le jury s’attend à recevoir des projets de reportage clairs et concis qui témoignent de leur pertinence sociale, économique, politique, culturelle, scientifique ou environnementale pour le Québec et le Canada.

Le ou la candidat.e doit montrer qu’il ou elle maîtrise le sujet (prérecherche).

Il ou elle doit préciser son angle de reportage, démontrer le caractère original et inédit du reportage qu’il ou elle propose, et indiquer les éléments qui constitueront son travail de terrain (personnes à rencontrer, lieux à visiter, événements auxquels assister, etc.).

Pour participer :

Les candidat.es feront parvenir leur dossier par courriel au secrétariat des bourses d’excellence (bourse.excellence@ajiq.qc.ca) au plus tard le 15 mars 2023. Ce dossier doit contenir :

  • Un curriculum vitae – deux (2) pages au maximum
  • Une lettre de motivation
  • Un résumé du projet de deux (2) pages au maximum (voir plus loin les précisions sur le contenu et les critères d’évaluation).  Les reportages doivent être faits au Québec et au Canada et le format (presse écrite, Web, multimédia, radio, balado ou télé) du reportage doit être mentionné au dépôt de la candidature.
  • Un montage financier réaliste expliqué en une page de 3 000$ (minimum) à 7 000$ (maximum) pour des projets individuels ou en équipe. Les dépenses doivent être justifiées. Il y aura reddition de comptes pour les dépenses a posteriori; factures justificatives des dépenses à remettre au secrétariat des bourses d’excellence.
    *À noter que les frais de subsistance ne peuvent pas être supérieurs aux dépenses de production et qu’un pourcentage des frais de subsistance sera versé a posteriori du projet. 
  • La mention de la bourse doit être associée à chaque contenu publié ou diffusé dans les médias.
  • La promesse de publication d’au moins un média québécois ou canadien (le média a la responsabilité de payer la pige)
    *À noter qu’il faudra remettre au secrétariat les liens de publication.

Spécificité du montage financier :

  • Échéancier
  • Frais de subsistance de 500$ par semaine pour le.s candidat.es, en fonction de la durée de la période de production prévue pour le reportage. Les frais de subsistance ne peuvent pas dépasser 50 % du budget total du projet.
  • Dépenses liées aux déplacements, à l’hébergement, aux repas sur le terrain
  • Dépenses de matériel (seules les locations d’équipement seront remboursées pour les projets multimédias)
  • Toute autre dépense pertinente justifiée

Critères d’évaluation :
Le jury tiendra compte de la méthodologie, de la qualité des intervenants suggérés, des lieux visés, des événements considérés et de la documentation consultée. L’échéancier devra être le plus précis possible. Si il y a des demandes d’accès à l’info, il faudra les expliquer. Le ou la candidat.e devra également énumérer quelles sont les retombées escomptées de ce reportage. 

Le ou la candidat.e doit démontrer qu’il ou elle a la capacité de réaliser le projet et expliquer en quoi il/elle est le/la plus apte à faire ce reportage, et pour quelle raison.

Le montage financier doit être réaliste.

[FRENCH summer internship] – Unpointcinq, le média de l’action climatique – Bourse CDPQ/FPJQ – Deadline March 16

Unpointcinq, média numérique de solutions consacré à l’action climatique au Québec cherche un.e stagiaire pour l’été 2023.
Actif depuis 5 ans dans le paysage médiatique, Unpointcinq traite de l’enjeu climatique sous de multiples facettes, car comme on a coutume de dire dans l’équipe : le climat est dans tout!

Le ou la stagiaire sera journaliste au sein de la rédaction d’Unpointcinq, son rôle serait donc de produire des contenus, principalement des textes, mais aussi de participer à la production d’autres formats selon ses compétences et intérêts.
Au-delà de ce rôle, le ou la stagiaire sera membre de l’équipe à part entière et aura la possibilité d’expérimenter ce qu’implique de travailler dans un jeune média en pleine évolution et perpétuelle transformation. 

Qui?
L’offre s’adresse aux étudiants et étudiantes de 18 ans et plus, membre de la FPJQ, qui sont inscrits dans un programme de journalisme d’un établissement d’enseignement basé au Québec (collégial ou universitaire).
Plus précisément, nous recherchons une personne allumée par la question du changement climatique (c’est tout à fait correct de ne pas avoir d’expérience dans le domaine, l’importance est d’avoir le goût d’en savoir plus) et qui n’a pas peur d’essayer des choses nouvelles (nous valorisons particulièrement la créativité, l’audace et la prise de risque contrôlée).  

Comment?
Nous ouvrons ce stage dans le cadre de la Bourse CDPQ/FPJQ,  il faut donc qu’au moins un tiers des contenus produits traite de finances ou économie (bien sûr en lien avec les enjeux climatiques dans notre cas). Le stage est rémunéré et doit faire entre 12 et 16 semaines, ça peut être à temps partiel ou plein mais minimum 15-20h/semaine.

You surf social media easily and would like to do media coverage of an exceptional sporting event?

We need you from April 13th to 16th as our association hosts a competition venue for the 2023 Chevrolet Men’s Cup. Hockey teams from across Quebec will compete to win the provincial champion’s title.

During these 4 days filled with emotions and action, you will be called to share all the frenzy that takes place in the arena, to users via the Facebook, Twitter and Instagram networks of the event through the distribution of video, photo sharing, short interviews, drafting interesting or crazy short stories with the help of the Hockey Québec communications team.

We are seeking a Freelance News and/or Features Writer who is already entrenched in all things Hip-Hop, R&B, pop culture, and online media. This person should have an in-depth knowledge of Hip-Hop and the new artists buzzing right now. This person should be extremely familiar with a variety of social media channels as sources for news, alongside major publications– the ideal candidate already checks these sources daily.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute a minimum of 5 feature articles per week (800-1,000 words each) or 10 news articles per week (350-450 words each).
  • Work efficiently and under tight deadlines.
  • Brainstorm and pitch content ideas to Editors based on trending SEO keywords.
  • Aggregate and write feature/list pieces from appropriate trending topics across the web as well as sources provided.
  • Maintain constant knowledge of all current hip-hop and pop culture news;

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience working with an online publication or with a digital audience
  • Your writing is clear, concise, engaging, and requires very little editing
  • You take direction well, always implement feedback, and have strong time management skills
  • You have an in-depth knowledge of hip-hop, both past, and present, and you are often responsible for putting your friends on to the newest and latest
  • Previous experience working with WordPress is an asset.

CJLO 1690AM is hiring volunteers!
CJLO 1690 AM is Concordia’s only radio station. CJLO is 100% non-profit and runs entirely on the power of its volunteers and it’s a part of our mission to teach and train students and community members. CJLO can offer hands-on training in broadcasting, sound production, live recording, promotions, sales, broadcast administration, news writing and reporting, marketing, and much more! Our volunteers go on to work in commercial radio, the music industry, broadcast journalism, and many other fields. In today’s competitive workforce, experience is vital. Volunteering at CJLO is a great place to gain the experience you need to stand out in any industry.
